Project A02: Macroscopic volume conductor models for deep brain stimulation

While deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a clinically tested treatment that demonstrated improvements in patients, the knowledge of the DBS mechanism is not comprehensive and further investigation is required in order to increase efficiency of the treatment. In the scope of this project, macroscopic volume conductor models for accurate prediction of the volume of tissue activated are being developed. The development is carried out in automatic mode using open-source tools. The main focus of the project is numerical simulations of the induced extracellular electric fields and their effect on the neural activity. Application of computational methods for DBS allows to optimize the stimulation protocol and account for variations among patients.
